Overview

Percentage-based discounts are the most common type of discount you’ll encounter in retail and e-commerce. Our calculator makes it simple to determine your final price and total savings when a discount is expressed as a percentage off the original price.
Percentage discounts are ideal for sales events like “20% off” or “50% clearance” promotions.

How It Works

1

Enter Original Price

Input the original price of the item you want to purchase. For example, if a jacket costs $150, enter that amount.
2

Input Discount Percentage

Enter the discount percentage offered. This should be a number between 0 and 100. For a “25% off” sale, you would enter 25.
3

Select Percentage Discount Type

Choose “Percentage” as your discount type from the calculator options.
4

View Results

The calculator instantly displays your final price and the total amount you’ll save.

Calculation Formula

The percentage discount calculation follows this formula:
Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount Percentage ÷ 100)
Final Price = Original Price - Discount Amount
Savings = Discount Amount
The discount percentage is always divided by 100 to convert it to a decimal for calculation purposes.

Real-World Examples

Scenario: A designer dress is on sale
  • Original Price: $200
  • Discount: 30%
  • Calculation:
    • Discount Amount = 200×(30÷100)=200 × (30 ÷ 100) = 200 × 0.30 = $60
    • Final Price = 200200 - 60 = $140
    • Savings = $60
You pay 140andsave140 and save 60 on your purchase.

Common Discount Percentages

Here’s a quick reference guide for popular discount percentages:
Discount %MultiplierYou Pay
10%0.9090% of original
15%0.8585% of original
20%0.8080% of original
25%0.7575% of original
30%0.7070% of original
40%0.6060% of original
50%0.5050% of original
75%0.2525% of original
For quick mental math, remember that a 50% discount means you pay half the original price, and a 25% discount means you pay three-quarters.

Use Cases

Percentage-based discounts are perfect for:
  • Seasonal Sales: Summer clearance, Black Friday, end-of-season sales
  • Loyalty Programs: Member-exclusive percentage discounts
  • Bulk Purchases: Volume-based percentage reductions
  • Flash Sales: Time-limited percentage-off promotions
  • Employee Discounts: Staff discount programs

Tips for Maximum Savings

Compare Percentages

Higher percentages don’t always mean bigger savings. A 30% discount on a 100itemsaveslessthana20100 item saves less than a 20% discount on a 200 item.

Stack When Possible

Some retailers allow stacking percentage discounts with other promotions. Always check if you can combine offers.

Calculate Before Checkout

Use the calculator before making a purchase decision to ensure the deal meets your budget.

Watch for Tax

Remember that sales tax applies to the final discounted price, not the original price.
